Good start to sheep breeding sales
With the sheep breeding sales underway the prices are not much less than last years levels and in some cases even show a small increase

Dumfries Mart Scotch Mule ewe lamb sale 31/08/12

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart had forward a catalogue entry of 3035 Ewe Lambs at their Annual Sale in Dumfries on Friday 31st August 2012.

This incorporated the Show & Sale of Scotch Mule Ewe Lambs on behalf of the Scotch Mule Association and Sponsored by Natural Stockcare Ltd. The Judge D Dickie, Knockenjig awarded the Nithsdale trophy for the best pen to Messes JL Walker & Co, Tower Farm, Sanquhar and they realised £135 to Messrs RJ Fry, Porterstown, Keir, Thornhill. The Reserve pen from Messrs K Park & Sons, Dalpeddar made the day’s top price selling for £150 also to Messrs Fry.

In general trade was above expectations and despite the horrendous summer lambs showed themselves in good condition. This resulted in the average price levelling at £108.58 a rise of £4 on the Year.

There was 2505 Gimmers forward – a packed ringside of both local and distant buyers were in attendance – demand for all classes was good to average £148.33 a rise of £1.10 kindly sponsored by Process Plant & Machinery.

Rory Shennan, Carsegowan was given the task of finding the best pen of Scotch Mule Gimmers in the mart which he awarded to M/S RJ Fry, Porterstown selling at £198 to M/S Brunton, Arbroath.

Bakewell Mart Breeding Sheep Sale 5/09/12

The Ken Allen Memorial trophy for the best pen of mule shearlings was awarded to Michael Gent of Tean near Uttoxeter at the September sale of Breeding sheep at Bakewell. 

Auctioneers Bagshaws reported a highly successful sale with all but six of the 5,000 sheep forward changing hands with most breeds and crosses producing significantly increased averages over last year. 

The mules made up the largest contingent with almost 2,200 on offer elling to £172 to average £138.45 overall. Quality was mixed report auctioneers, with a top price of £172 for a pen from I D Gregory, Peak Forest. 

The 1,400 Texel crosses rose in popularity with their average up some £8 on the year at £135.97. Topping prices in the Texel pens were Ede Holdings, Hollington at £176. 

While texel crosses were in great demand Suffolk crosses were harder to sell with the best from I Cunningham of Biggin by Hartington at £146 and the average back at £122.75. 

The surprise of the day was an unprecedented demand for Mashams with a top call of £198 for a pen from Mr N Mycock of Buxton, which contained several specimens which has won prizes at Hope Show 

The 109 Mashams in the sale achieved a remarkable average of £149.54.

Hexham first Mule ewe lamb sale 7/09/12

Hexham and Northern Marts held their opening sale of the season of Mule Ewe Lambs on behalf of Members and Non Members of the North of England Mule Sheep Association. 

The show was expertly judged by Andrew Proctor, Swarland Old Hall who had an excellent run of Top Lambs before him and eventually made his decision to award the Robson & Cowan Trophy to an outstanding pen of 25 lambs from Philip Teasdale of Crow Hall Farms, Bardon Mill.  These lambs were later sold at £180 to Joe Vickers, South Rennington. 

A packed ring of buyers from Devon to the Scottish Borders bid strongly throughout the sale.  Strong lambs were a superb trade, while smaller runners were harder to sell, but still resulting in a pleasing average of £4 up on 2011.

Knighton Mart Breeding Sale 11/09/12

McCartneys auctioneers reported an entry of 3,054 breeding sheep at Knighton Market's first grand multi breed sale of breeding ewes, rams and ewe lambs with a pleasing start to the autumn sale season. 

Yearling ewes sold well with an overall average of £143.33 a head and selling to £175 a head for the champion pen of Welsh Mule ewes from A T Bennett and Son, Bronrevel. Also to £170 a head for Welsh Mule yearling ewes from both G H Lloyd and Co, Upper Buckton and A T Bennett and Son, Bronrevel. 

Welsh Mule yearlings reached £168 a head from both E R Jones, Dolagored Fach and J L Jones and Partners, Llanrhys. A bid of £166 a head was also realised for Welsh Mule yearling ewes from G H Lloyd and Co, Upper Buckton. 

White Faced Welsh Muke ewes reached £163 a head from A T Bennett and Son, Bronrevel. 

Ewe lambs averaged £79.30 a head and sold to £145 a head for purebred Texel ewe lambs from J P L Owens, Aberceithon. Also to £115 a head for purebred Texel ewe lambs again from J P L Owens, Aberceithon. Welsh Mule ewe lambs sold to £86 a head from T V Price, Little Vaynor. 

Breeding rams sold to 350gns for a purebred Charollais ram from T Richards, Old Hall. Also to 280gns for Texel rams from J P Breeze and Son, Fronladies.

Skipton Mart Mule Sale 11/09/12

North of England Mule gimmer lambs averaged £109 to get the breed's main autumn sale season off to a cracking start when just over 7000 lambs were sold at Skipton Auction Mart on Tuesday. 

Tupping lambs were a similar trade to this sale last year and were making within £5 of 2011 values. The best lambs were changing hands at £130-£145 but any good, dark-faced lambs were readily selling for £120-£140. Lighter-faced lambs of the same quality were making £105-£120. 

Running lambs sold well with not many making less than £90 apiece; darker-faced, strong runners were £90-£100. 

Top price was £295 for a pen of 10 lambs from John Mason, Embsay, Skipton and bought by Michael Allen, Whitby.
